Flurry of July 4th Accidents Are a Reminder to Drive Safely

WSOC Channel 9 Eyewitness News reported on Thursday that at least one car was involved in an automobile accident in which at least two pedestrians were hit and injured. The accident occurred on the corner of College Street and Stonewall Street in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, closing the intersection for a number of hours. While two of the victims were treated on the scene, five people in total (including three car passengers) were transferred to Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) for further treatment of serious injuries. This car and pedestrian accident is one of many to happen on or surrounding the Fourth of July holiday each year. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Independence Day weekend is the second deadliest time of year for drivers in North Carolina and across the country (the deadliest is New Year’s). In 2004 alone, 253 people were killed on July 4, with the vast majority of those accidents involving drivers operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. What can you do to protect yourself and your family from car, truck, and pedestrian accidents during the summer holidays? Drive defensively. Driving aggressively will only put you and your vehicle at higher risk, especially when there are impaired drivers on the road. Be vigilant, don’t assume you know what a driver is about to do, and keep an appropriate following distance from other drivers on the highway.Know how to detect a drunk driver. If you see a car near you weaving, drifting, driving erratically, responding slowly, or stopping suddenly, keep your distance and call the police to report the incident. Don’t attempt to pass the vehicle or to stop the driver. Buckle up. Make sure your passengers have their seat belts buckled and that your children are in their car seats. Remember that drowsiness is an impairment, too. Even if you understand the dangers of driving drunk, you may not know that being sleepy behind the wheel is also a hazard to yourself and others. If you stay out late on the Fourth or have simply had a long day of celebrating, let someone else take the wheel or take a short nap until you are rested and ready to drive. For more tips on driving safely during the summer holiday, please visit the National Safety Council’s page on driving defensively.

A Focus on Dog Bite Laws and Dog Bite Prevention

In Chapel Hill as well as a number of other cities around North Carolina, lawmakers and citizens are butting heads over dog tethering laws. While some argue that tethering is necessary and humane, others argue that prolonged tethering can lead to aggressive behavior and is not fair to the dogs themselves. Specifically in Chapel Hill, Orange County officials are proposing a three-hour tethering limit, along with the requirement of proper tethering equipment and a minimum size for enclosures. Four other jurisdictions in North Carolina have already adopted similar tethering laws. Tethering and dog abuse laws are, as one can imagine, intimately tied to the issue of dog aggression and dog bite injury cases. Dogs on short tethers are historically more dangerous than dogs in fenced yards or kennels and one rule of dog bite prevention is that strange dogs on tethers should not be approached at all. To help our readers better understand dog bite laws in North Carolina and how you can keep you and your family safe from dog attacks and dog-related injuries, we have added three new library items to our webpage:The Most Dangerous Dog Breeds – Bites, Mauls, and Deaths. Know which types of dogs are more likely to harm you or your kids, and know which breeds have a history of attacking without warning. North Carolina Dog Bite Laws – What is the One-Bite Rule? What is Strict Liability? Know if your dog bite injury case holds water and learn about the different ways that dogs can be categorized as dangerous in the eyes of the law. Dog Bite Prevention Tips. Although it is important to know what to do in the event and in the wake of a dog attack, it is even more vital to understand how to prevent a dog attack before it happens. A few simple guidelines that are simple and clear enough to teach your young children could save you from the anguish, trouble, and cost of a dog-related injury.

North Carolina Reported Worst State in Country for Heart-Stress Death Rate Among Workers

The North Carolina News & Observer reported on June 21, 2008, that North Carolina leads all 50 states when it comes to a scary statistic. The heart-stress death rate for workers in the state is 2.36 per 100,000. Even the second worst state, Florida, boasts a much healthier rate of 0.76 per 100,000. These numbers suggest that North Carolina workers may be feeling more stress at work than those working in other states – stress that can lead to a 40 percent greater chance of heart attacks and heart failure than those who are not affected by large amounts of stress in the workplace. Stress in the workplace comes at a high cost for all involved, from the company itself, to its employees at all levels. Stress weakens the immune system, makes workers’ mentally distracted, and costs companies billions a year in lost hours, insurance claims, and lowered productivity. In fact, stress claims are beginning to be the single most costly claim in workers’ compensation cases across the state. Medical studies have estimated that 50 to 80 percent of all diseases are stress related in some way. How can you make your workplace a healthier place and prevent injuries and health problems? Ask your manager for stress management training and education. Increase open communication in your office in order to avoid workplace conflicts and ensure that everyone is talking about how they are feeling during taxing times. Make sure that you set realistic goals for production and promote a healthy and supportive attitude. Ask about an exercise and/or health or wellness program that helps both body and mind. The best way to tackle stress in general, however, is simple awareness of the problem. Talk with coworkers and step back and analyze your own career – are you feeling too much stress in your job?
