A personal injury complaint has been filed against Madison County, Illinois Transit by a woman alleging that as she was boarding an MCT bus, her wheelchair tipped over.
The suit was filed on August 14 by Sandra McQueen claiming that on September 1, 2007, she sustained personal injuries while trying to board a bus in Wood River, Illinois.
McQueen said that a wheelchair ramp was extended by the bus driver in order to allow her to enter. However, she claims that as she was driving her wheelchair up the ramp, it tipped over backwards, which resulted in her falling and sustaining personal injuries.
McQueen alleges negligence on the part of MCT for its failure to park the bus close enough to the curb that the extended ramp would meet with the sidewalk, rather than the street. She also claims MCT lowered the ramp at an unsafe angle, failed to assist a wheelchair bound individual who was entering the bus, and failed to follow its own rules, guidelines and procedures.
McQueen claims that she suffered personal injuries to her head, neck, right arm, legs, and ankles which have caused her to incur medical expenses and have prevented her from attending to her usual duties and affairs. She seeks damages exceeding $15,000, but less than $50,000 in addition to court costs.
