Social Security Disability Benefits Available For Disabled COPD Victims

Social Security Disability benefits are available for those who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)


In order to receive benefits, the COPD victim must prove that he or she is unable because of the disease, to maintain substantial gainful employment.

To make a claim, visit your local Social Security office and fill out the appropriate documents. You will not need lawyer at this stage.

If you are turned down, you must appeal within 60 days of your notice. If you get a denial notice, you should see an experienced Social Security Disability lawyer immediately.

A simple test exists to diagnose the deadly lung disease, which most people know nothing about. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease that combines all the diseases that obstruct breathing, such chronic bronchitis and emphysema.


In a healthy lung, the airways are elastic. A lung in a person with COPD becomes obstructed and collapses, making it difficult for air to move in and out.


Every four minutes, one person dies of COPD. Approximately 24 million people have COPD, half of which do not even know that they do.


Many doctors don’t recognize the symptoms of the disease as being serious, an incorrect diagnosis. A simple lung capacity test is all it takes to diagnose COPD.


There is a link between COPD and smoking. Approximately 80 percent of all patients of COPD are or used to be smokers. Many believe that the attached stigmas of smoking are what have resulted in the lack of awareness and research for the diseased.


Though COPD is currently an incurable disease, it is a treatable disease. Various medications and a regular exercise routine can help restore some of a patient’s lung capacity. Unfortunately, it cannot rid a person of the disease.
